The specialty that integrates nursing science with information management and analytical sciences to identify, define, manage, and communicate data, information, knowledge, and wisdom in nursing practice.

 

Health Information Technology (HIT):

The application of information processing involving both computer hardware and software to the storage, retrieval, sharing, and use of health care information, data, and knowledge.

 

Electronic Health Record (EHR):

A digital version of a patient’s paper chart, containing their medical history, diagnoses, medications, treatment plans, immunization dates, allergies, radiology images, and laboratory test results.

 

Clinical Decision Support System (CDSS):

A computerized program that assists healthcare professionals in making clinical decisions by providing evidence-based information, alerts, and recommendations.

 

Interoperability:

The ability of different information systems, devices, or applications to connect, communicate, and exchange data seamlessly in a coordinated and efficient manner.

 

Telehealth:

The use of digital information and communication technologies, such as video conferencing, to access healthcare services remotely, promoting patient engagement and improving accessibility.

 

Health Information Exchange (HIE):

The electronic sharing of health-related information among healthcare stakeholders, including hospitals, clinics, and other healthcare organizations, to improve patient care coordination.

 

Usability:

The degree to which a system, such as electronic health records or health apps, can be easily and effectively used by its intended users to achieve specific goals with efficiency and satisfaction.

 

Big Data:

Large and complex datasets generated in healthcare, including patient records, imaging data, and genomic information, that require advanced analytics for meaningful interpretation.

 

Clinical Documentation:

The creation and maintenance of accurate, detailed, and timely records of a patient’s medical history, diagnosis, treatment, and outcomes in electronic health records.

 

Meaningful Use:

A set of criteria and objectives established by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) to encourage the adoption and meaningful use of electronic health records by healthcare providers.
