Mental Illness/Impairment

Mental illness refers to a wide range of conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. It can vary in severity and duration, impacting a person’s ability to function in daily life. Mental impairment encompasses cognitive, emotional, and behavioral difficulties that interfere with a person’s ability to perform tasks and interact with others effectively.

 

Depression

A mood disorder characterized by persistent feelings of sadness, hopelessness, and loss of interest or pleasure in activities. Depression can also manifest with physical symptoms such as changes in appetite or sleep patterns.

 

Anxiety Disorders

A group of mental health conditions characterized by excessive worry, fear, or nervousness. This can include generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder, and specific phobias.

 

Bipolar Disorder

A mood disorder marked by alternating periods of elevated mood (mania or hypomania) and depression. Individuals with bipolar disorder may experience extreme shifts in energy levels, activity, and behavior.

 

Schizophrenia

A chronic and severe mental disorder characterized by disturbances in thought, perception, and behavior. Symptoms may include hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and difficulty with social interaction.

 

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

A mental health condition triggered by experiencing or witnessing a traumatic event. Symptoms can include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

 

Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD)

An anxiety disorder characterized by intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to alleviate anxiety. These rituals can interfere with daily activities and cause significant distress.

 

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

A neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. ADHD symptoms typically begin in childhood and can persist into adulthood, impacting academic, work, and social functioning.

 

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD)

A personality disorder characterized by unstable moods, behavior, and relationships. Individuals with BPD may have intense fear of abandonment, unstable self-image, impulsive behaviors, and difficulty regulating emotions.

 

Substance Use Disorders (SUD)

A group of conditions characterized by problematic use of substances such as alcohol, drugs, or medications. Substance use disorders can lead to physical, psychological, and social impairments, often requiring treatment and support for recovery.
