Long-Term Care Facility (LTCF)

A residential facility that provides long-term care services to individuals who require assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs) or medical supervision on a regular basis. LTCFs offer a range of services, including nursing care, rehabilitation, and assistance with daily tasks, for individuals who are unable to fully care for themselves due to age, illness, or disability.

Activities of Daily Living (ADLs)

Basic self-care tasks that individuals typically perform daily, including bathing, dressing, grooming, toileting, eating, and mobility. Assistance with these activities is often required for residents of LTCFs.

Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)

A type of LTCF that provides skilled nursing care and rehabilitation services to individuals with complex medical needs, such as those recovering from surgery, injury, or serious illness. SNFs offer round-the-clock nursing care supervised by registered nurses.

Assisted Living Facility (ALF)

A residential facility that provides assistance with ADLs and medication management for individuals who are generally independent but may require some support with daily tasks or supervision for safety reasons. ALFs offer a more home-like environment compared to traditional nursing homes.

Respite Care

Short-term care provided by LTCFs to give primary caregivers a break from their caregiving responsibilities. Respite care can range from a few hours to several days and allows caregivers to rest and recharge while ensuring their loved ones receive necessary care.

Memory Care Unit (MCU)

A specialized unit within an LTCF designed to cater to the needs of individuals with Alzheimer’s disease, dementia, or other cognitive impairments. MCU staff members are trained to provide specialized care and support for residents with memory-related conditions.

Hospice Care

End-of-life care provided to individuals with terminal illnesses or conditions. Hospice care focuses on managing pain and providing emotional support to both the patient and their family members. Some LTCFs offer hospice services either on-site or through partnerships with external hospice agencies.

Physical Therapy (PT)

Rehabilitation services provided by licensed physical therapists to help individuals regain or improve their physical function and mobility. PT is often offered in LTCFs to residents recovering from surgery, injury, or illness to enhance their independence and quality of life.

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Rehabilitation services provided by licensed occupational therapists to help individuals regain or develop the skills needed to perform activities of daily living, such as dressing, grooming, and meal preparation. OT aims to promote independence and improve quality of life for LTCF residents.

Resident Rights

Legal rights afforded to individuals residing in LTCFs to ensure their safety, dignity, and quality of life. Resident rights typically include the right to privacy, autonomy, informed consent, freedom from abuse and neglect, and the right to voice grievances without fear of retaliation.
