Internist

A physician who specializes in internal medicine, dealing with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases. Internists are trained to manage complex and chronic illnesses and provide comprehensive care to adult patients.

Primary Care Physician (PCP)

A healthcare provider, often an internist, who serves as the patient’s main point of contact for medical care. PCPs focus on preventive care, general health maintenance, and the treatment of common illnesses.

Internal Medicine

A medical specialty focused on the diagnosis and treatment of diseases affecting internal organs, such as the heart, lungs, kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal tract. Internists may also manage chronic conditions like diabetes, hypertension, and arthritis.

General Internal Medicine

A branch of internal medicine that encompasses a wide range of medical conditions, including preventive care, management of acute illnesses, and coordination of care for complex medical issues.

Subspecialty

An area of expertise within internal medicine that requires additional training beyond residency. Examples include cardiology (heart diseases), gastroenterology (digestive system disorders), and endocrinology (hormonal disorders).

Continuity of Care

The provision of consistent, uninterrupted healthcare services over time. Internists often emphasize continuity of care by maintaining long-term relationships with their patients, managing chronic conditions, and coordinating care across different healthcare settings.

Diagnostic Tests

Procedures or examinations used to identify medical conditions and guide treatment decisions. Internists may order various diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, imaging studies (X-rays, CT scans), and electrocardiograms (EKGs), to evaluate patients’ health status.

Evidence-Based Medicine

Medical practice based on scientific research, clinical expertise, and patient values. Internists rely on evidence-based guidelines and clinical trials to inform their treatment decisions and provide the most effective care to patients.

Multidisciplinary Team

A group of healthcare professionals with diverse expertise who collaborate to deliver comprehensive care to patients. Internists often work as part of multidisciplinary teams that may include nurses, pharmacists, specialists, and other allied health professionals.

Patient-Centered Care

An approach to healthcare that prioritizes the individual needs, preferences, and values of patients. Internists strive to deliver patient-centered care by involving patients in decision-making, promoting shared decision-making, and addressing patients’ concerns and preferences throughout the care process.
