Instructional Healthcare Directive (IHD)

A legal document that allows individuals to outline their preferences for medical treatment and care in specific healthcare situations when they are unable to communicate their wishes. It guides healthcare professionals and loved ones regarding the individual’s healthcare decisions.

 

Advance Directive

A legal document that includes various instructions and preferences regarding healthcare treatment, end-of-life care, and medical decision-making. An Instructional Healthcare Directive is a type of advance directive.

 

Medical Power of Attorney (POA)

A legal document that designates an individual to make healthcare decisions on behalf of the person who created the document if they become incapacitated and unable to make decisions for themselves.

 

Living Will

A document that outlines a person’s preferences for medical treatment and end-of-life care, such as preferences regarding life-sustaining treatment or palliative care, to guide healthcare decisions in case of incapacitation.

 

Healthcare Proxy

An individual designated in an advance directive or Instructional Healthcare Directive to make healthcare decisions on behalf of the person who created the document if they become unable to do so themselves.

 

Terminal Illness

A medical condition for which there is no cure and is expected to result in death within a relatively short period, typically six months to a year.

 

Life-Sustaining Treatment

Medical interventions and procedures that are used to prolong life, such as artificial ventilation, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and artificial nutrition and hydration.

 

Palliative Care

Medical care focused on providing relief from symptoms and improving the quality of life for individuals with serious illnesses, regardless of prognosis, with a focus on comfort and holistic support.

 

Do Not Resuscitate (DNR) Order

A medical order indicating that healthcare providers should not attempt cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in case of cardiac or respiratory arrest.

 

End-of-Life Care

Medical care and support provided to individuals who are nearing the end of their life, including pain management, emotional support, and assistance with decision-making about treatment options.
