Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU)

A specialized unit within a hospital dedicated to the care of patients with severe cardiac conditions, such as heart attacks, heart failure, or post-cardiac surgery.

Critical Care Nurse

Nurses with specialized training in critical care who provide round-the-clock monitoring, assessment, and care for patients in the CICU. They administer medications, monitor vital signs, and assist in procedures as needed.

Ventilator

A life-saving machine that assists with breathing for patients who are unable to breathe adequately on their own. It’s commonly used in the CICU for patients with respiratory distress or failure.

Intra-Aortic Balloon Pump (IABP)

A mechanical device inserted into the aorta to improve cardiac function and blood flow in patients with severe heart failure or after certain cardiac procedures. It’s a temporary measure often utilized in the CICU.

Continuous Cardiac Monitoring

Continuous monitoring of cardiac rhythm, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and other vital signs using specialized equipment. This constant monitoring is essential in the CICU for early detection of any deterioration in the patient’s condition.

Cardiac Catheterization

A diagnostic procedure to evaluate the heart’s blood vessels and chambers using a catheter inserted into the arteries. It helps diagnose and treat conditions like coronary artery disease and may be performed in the CICU setting.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO)

A life support technique that provides cardiac and respiratory support to patients with severe heart or lung failure. ECMO may be used in the CICU for patients who are unresponsive to conventional treatments.

Vasoactive Medications

Drugs that affect the tone of blood vessels and the heart, used to support blood pressure and cardiac function in critically ill patients. Examples include dopamine, dobutamine, and norepinephrine, often administered in the CICU.

Multidisciplinary Team

A team of healthcare professionals including cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, critical care nurses, respiratory therapists, pharmacists, and others who collaborate to provide comprehensive care for patients in the CICU. Collaboration among team members is crucial for optimal patient outcomes.
